Construction work on Greenfield Dholera International Airport (DIAC) is set to start after the first board meeting of the Dholera International Airport Company (DIACL).

DIACL, a JV between Government of Gujarat and National Industrial Corridor Development & Implementation Trust (NICDIT) and the Airports Authority of India (AAI), recently held its first Board meeting of the reconstituted board under the Chairmanship of Guruprasad Mohapatra, Chairman, Airports Authority of India, at Gandhinagar. The board meeting was held after the AAI picked up 51% equity stake in the company. 

Board Meeting collaborated with a project review meeting, was attended by senior officials of AAI. The meeting focused on the plans to incorporate the construction of the airport project on a fast-track mode. Officials from the AAI offered the required technical inputs to the concerned state department as per the needs of the new greenfield project. They also requested the state department to deliver requisite support for infrastructure like electricity supply, road connectivity, flood mitigation work, water supply, and earth reclamation. 

The airport will be constructed in a greenfield city under the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC) project at Dholera for a time span of 4 years. The airport being jointly developed by the Airports Authority of India, Government of Gujarat and the NICDIT, has 51%, 33% and 16% stake, respectively.

The existing airport at Ahmedabad has heavy traffic and needs an alternative. Also, with Dholera scheduled to be the next growth centre for the state, it would require a robust transport infrastructure. Considering these factors, Vijay Rupani, Honorable Chief Minister of Gujarat has given directions for incorporation of new airport project. Development of greenfield airport will act as a catalyst for the growth of the greenfield city, in addition to improving connectivity.
